SYMBOLS OF DECADENCE AND CORRUPTION IN AYI KWEI ARMAH’S THE BEAUTYFUL ONES ARE NOT YET BORN AND FESTUS IYAYI’S VIOLENCE



CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1   Background to the Study
         A symbol according to Wikipedia is a mark, sign or work that indicates or signifies something.
         Decadence therefore is used to mean a perceived decay in standards, morals, dignity, religious faith or skill at Governing among members of the states or nations there is decadence is social, political, economic, religious issues, societal corruption in the novels of this project.
         The Beautyful once are not yet Born is a novels that shows the decadence of African political elites who are driven by greed and have taken to corruption in their countries. It is seen that the “man” in the novels despite resisting being bribed by the call political elites, the family scolds him for sticking to what is right.
         In Violence by Festus Iyayi, the main character Idemudia and his family is oppressed by the upper rich class. This novel exposes the injustice in the social system. Moral bankruptcy is illustrated through indiscipline and senseless sexual engagement of Obufun’s family which satieties immorality and moral decadence in our society and system.
         The two novels use satire, in order to correct the decadence in the society, which is analyzed here in this research work. The problem of decadence is observes from the perspective of the characters in the novels.

1.2   Statement of the Problem  
         The statement of the problem causing decadence in the society is greed embedded in the black African minds. Greed for power, personal wealth and corruption influence in the society. Corruption which has been accepted as the normal way of life has done more bad than good in the society and portrayed in the two novels.

1.3   Purpose of the Study 
         The main purpose of this research study is to examine the extent of moral decadence in the two texts titled The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born and Violence. It also discusses the consequences of this decadence to the individuals and the society or nation.
