AKWA IBOM STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY PASSES HEALTH INSURANCE SCHEME BILL

AKWA Ibom State House of Assembly has passed the bill for the establishment of the State Health Insurance Agency and Scheme into law, commending Governor Udom Emmanuel for making budgetary provision of N600 million for the scheme. The bill was passed after the third reading on the floor of the House during yesterday’s plenary presided over by the Speaker, Mr. Onofiok Luke. While passing the law, Luke explained that the State Health Insurance Bill brings to a total of 15, out 40 bills passed by the current Assembly during the second legislative year. Luke, who was the lead sponsor of the bill, noted that the budgetary provision of N600 million by Governor Emmanuel will help the smooth take-off of scheme, adding that citizens will count on the wisdom of the state executive to appoint competent hands to manage the agency created by the law. The Speaker who listed some of the reasons that prompted the law, said: “First, is the fact that this House believes that every Akwa Ibom citizen deserves access to good and affordable healthcare services. “Also, experts aver that the domestication of the scheme will not only spur equitable distribution of healthcare costs among different income groups, but protect families from the hardship of huge medical bills. “The state cannot guarantee sustainable development until we are able to holistically guarantee improved healthcare services through making available, laws that will guarantee government’s insurance in the health sector. “It is for this reason that this House thought it imperative to create a health insurance scheme and an agency to manage the scheme.” And this is in line with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 which is to achieve universal health coverage including financial risk protection.” He commended the House Committee on Health chaired by member representing Uyo constituency, Monday Eyo for doing a thorough job on this bill as well as stakeholders within the state health sector, whose contributions were central to the outcome of the law.

JAMB reveals number of registered candidates as registration ends this week

  JAMB has revealed that over 1,223,962 candidates have been registered in the ongoing 2021  UTME  registration while over 63,586 candidates have been registered for the Direct Entry as of May 24th, 2021. This was contained in the weekly bulletin publication of the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) via its official website. According to JAMB, the registration deadline remains May 29th, 2021. JAMB however did not disclose if the e-PIN  vending  will end on the same date as the registration. That  notwithstanding , we advise candidates who are still yet to generate their profile codes to still keep trying as from all indications, the e-PIN vending will likely continue and end on the same date as registration unless JAMB officially announces otherwise. JAMB, tertiary institutions peg cut-off marks at 140,120, 100

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and heads of over 650 tertiary institutions in the country have agreed on cut-off marks for the 2018 admission exercise. The cut-off marks were part of decisions taken at the 2018 policy meeting by JAMB, university Vice Chancellors, Polytechnic Rectors and Provosts of Colleges of Education, and other heads of tertiary institutions. The policy meeting also approved that the 2018/2019 admission exercise will start on July 17 to October 15 (merit), second choice start October 17 and admission will end December 17. Based on appeal and vote by the heads of tertiary institutions, the policy meeting approved that private universities should end their admission by February ending. The 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) was taken by 1, 653, 127mllion candidates.
